UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, in cooperation with the Embassy of Tanzania in Tokyo, held the “Tanzania Investment Seminar” in light of the visit of Mr. Gilead J. Teri, Executive Director of Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) to Japan. The seminar was held on Tuesday 28 May 2024 at Tokyo, with the attendance of 124 participants and on Friday 31 May 2024 in Osaka, with the attendance of 72 participants interested in business or investment opportunities in Tanzania.
At the beginning of the seminar, H.E. Mr. Baraka H. Luvanda, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Embassy of the United Republic of Tanzania and Mr. Gilead J. Teri, Executive Director of Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) delivered opening remarks and called for investment and expansion of business into Tanzania. Tanzania was introduced as a promising hub in East Africa, with its relatively safe environment, political stability, economic stability, rich natural resources, investment guarantees, and strategic geography.
In his keynote speech, Mr. Shigeki Komatsubara, resident representative of UNDP Tanzania, gave a presentation about the growth in Africa and the Global South.
During the coffee break, the panelists and participants engaged in lively networking, while enjoying Tanzania coffee.
Following the coffee break, two Japanese companies currently conducting business in Tanzania talked about the attractions and challenges of doing business in Tanzania. Mr. Tatsuya Shiratori, sales and marketing Manager of OS Trading & Investments Ptg. Ltd. (OSTI), running the largest coffee plantation in Africa by a Japanese corporation, gave a keynote speech titled “ Agribusiness and Smart Village Initiative in Tanzania.” In his presentation, he introduced the development of a macadamia nut farm in Rwanda, the current ongoing endeavours in Tanzania, and the future smart village concept the company is pursuing. Ms. Fumiko Miyashita, managing director of COTS COTS LTD, talked about working with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and Japanese companies to support the promotion of Tanzania’s fisheries industry. In her keynote speech entitled “A Case Study of Fisheries Development Project” she touched on her experience of bringing Tanzanian seafood to Uganda and the appeal of developing a business in Tanzania.
In the Q&A session, questions were raised about the incentives and benefits for Japanese companies investing in Tanzania and the most promising sectors in Tanzania.
Finally, the seminar was closed by remarks from Ms. Fumio Adachi, head of UNIDO ITPO Tokyo and Dr. Kazusue Konoike, Honorary Consul of Honorary Consulate of the United Republic of Tanzania respectively in Tokyo and Osaka,
