Morocco: STePP Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa
Morocco
Background
In many developing countries, including Morocco, social issues related to wastewater treatment and waste management are serious. In these countries, the lack of proper sewage treatment facilities often leads to untreated wastewater being released into the natural environment, causing concerns over water pollution, the spread of diseases, and negative impacts on agricultural production. Regarding waste management, a large portion of the collected waste is processed using an open dump method without recycling or intermediate treatment, resulting in issues such as the scattering of plastic waste, the decay of food waste, contamination of water and soil, and fires, all of which severely affect public health. These problems are worsening with the increase in urban populations, and a comprehensive approach toward sustainable development is needed. UNIDO ITPO Tokyo, in collaboration with Japanese companies possessing the necessary technologies and expertise to address these challenges, has carried out two technical transfer and vocational training programmes in Morocco.
1. Knowledge Transfer of Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems Using Microbubble Generators(Hinode Sangyo Co., Ltd.)
Project Overview
Recognizing the current state of wastewater treatment in Morocco, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo will collaborate with Hinode Sangyo Co., Ltd., a company specializing in wastewater treatment systems, to implement a vocational training programme. This programme will be conducted in two phases. In Phase 1, two trainees from OFPPT, a public vocational training institution in Morocco, will be invited to Japan for a Training of Trainers (ToT) programme. Over the course of two weeks, the trainees will learn about best practices in Japanese wastewater treatment technology. Upon returning to Morocco, the trainees will develop a training curriculum based on their experiences in Japan and serve as instructors for local training in Phase 2. This training will be provided to more than 100 students at OFPPT, industrial professionals from private companies, government agencies, and other organizations involved in wastewater treatment in Morocco.
The goal of this initiative is to contribute to building the human resources necessary to enhance Morocco’s wastewater treatment infrastructure while facilitating the transfer of Japanese technology to Morocco. The introduction of advanced Japanese technologies is expected to drive business development in Morocco and contribute to the expansion of water infrastructure and job creation. The programme also includes a focus on promoting hygiene awareness and behavioral change by having participants tour wastewater treatment facility to observe their maintenance practices. It is anticipated that this will provide a strong foundation for the successful implementation of Morocco’s long-term sewerage development plans.
