Kenya: STePP Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa
Kenya
Background
In Kenya and many developing countries, dismantling and recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV’s) is mainly performed manually by the informal sector. As such workers are often not equipped with professional skills and knowledge to adequately dispose of dismantled material, worksites are prone to becoming the cause of various environmental problems that affect the wider community, such as CFC gas emissions, soil contamination from waste oil and lead, and high concentrations of heavy metals such as iron in nearby water sources. The lack of appropriate skills and equipment also significantly increases the risks of occupational health and safety incidents. These issues highlight the need to develop industrial human resources that are capable of recycling ELV’s in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
Project Overview
In this training, Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd. will provide the trainees with the environmentally friendly and safe recycling know-how for end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) that it has cultivated over the past 55 years and will also develop the skills of local business staff and trainees.
Prior to being invited to Japan, the trainees who will serve as local instructors will discuss the value chain of recycled materials in Kenya and consider optimal methods for dismantling and sorting automobiles in line with the local recycling industry infrastructure, which is thought to be immature. When trainees are invited to Japan, Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd. will help them acquire knowledge at the safety manager level by educating them on safety guidelines, laws and regulations. The technical training will include a demonstration of dismantling five ELVs and practical training, with local trainees acting as instructors to help deepen the participants’ knowledge of automobile dismantling structures. After the training, Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd. aims to complete a training curriculum tailored to the local area, based on practical and classroom training, so that the trainees will be able to work as instructors locally in Kenya.
