Tanzania: STePP Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa
United Republic of Tanzania
Environmentally Friendly End-of-Life Vehicle Recycling Technical Training(Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd.)
Background
In developing countries including the United Republic of Tanzania, dismantling and recycling of end-of-life vehicles (ELV’s) is mainly performed manually by the informal sector. As such workers are often not equipped with professional skills and knowledge to adequately dispose of dismantled material, worksites are prone to becoming the cause of various environmental problems that affect the wider community, such as waste oil, soil contamination from lead, atmospheric release of cooling gases, and illegal dumping of waste plastics, glass, and tires. The lack of appropriate skills and equipment also significantly increases the risks of occupational health and safety incidents. These issues highlight the need to develop industrial human resources that are capable of recycling ELV’s in a safe and environmentally sound manner.
Project Overview
Through the project, UNIDO ITPO Tokyo is working with the cooperation of Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd. to transfer environmentally friendly and safe used vehicle recycling technology, as well as to improve the skills of engineers who are working in the Tanzanian vehicle recycling sector. Developing human resources with the correct knowledge of used vehicle recycling will lead to the reuse and recycling of correctly dismantled vehicle parts and will also contribute to the creation of a sustainable recycling-oriented society.
The project will provide practical training, including a demonstration of dismantling used vehicles, to trainees invited from the United Republic of Tanzania, and transfer knowledge and skills related to dismantling vehicles. The training, under the guidance of Kaiho Industry Co., Ltd. will be comprehensive, covering safety guidelines and laws and regulations that trainees can acquire safe and environmentally friendly used vehicle recycling technology. After the training in Japan is completed, a vocational training curriculum will be created that includes practical skills and lectures suited to the social situation in the United Republic of Tanzania for trainees who were invited from the United Republic of Tanzania will transfer knowledge and technology which they acquired through training in Japan. The participants in the vocational training will learn dismantling technology for end-of-life vehicles that has a low impact on both the environment and humans, and will contribute to the realization of a sustainable, recycling-oriented society.
