Madagascar: STePP Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa
Madagascar
Rice Husk Solid Fuel Production Technology (Tromso Co., Ltd)
Background
Madagascar’s forests, which cover 20% of the country, are essential for maintaining its distinctive ecosystem and sustaining its tourism industry. These forests are home to a wealth of endemic species and play a critical role in the country’s natural heritage. However, they are under severe threat from deforestation, largely driven by the high demand for firewood and charcoal, which is exacerbated by a growing population. A promising strategy to address this issue is to convert rice husks into solid fuel. This approach could significantly reduce the reliance on firewood, thereby helping to protect the forests from further degradation. In addition to its environmental benefits, this method could create new job opportunities in the assembly, sale, maintenance, and operation of the equipment needed for conversion.
Implementing rice husk conversion technology is not only important for forest conservation but also for advancing renewable energy use in Madagascar. This solution represents a crucial step in balancing environmental protection with economic development, ensuring that both the natural environment and local communities can thrive.
Project Overview
Tromso Co., Ltd., in partnership with UNIDO, is leading a vocational training programme in Madagascar focused on sustainable fuel technology. The initiative will equip selected Malagasy trainers with the expertise to convert rice husks into solid fuel, a technology designed to mitigate deforestation by providing an alternative to traditional firewood and charcoal. Initial training will take place in Japan, where trainers will learn the technical aspects of solid fuel production, as well as safety and operational protocols of the Grind Mills. Upon their return, these trainers will conduct both theoretical and practical sessions in Madagascar utilizing Tromso’s specialized Grind Mills. The programme aims to develop a skilled local workforce, promote environmentally friendly practices, and support the growth of the local economy through sustainable energy solutions. This initiative not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also has the potential to inspire further technological collaborations and innovations in Madagascar.
