Ghana: STePP Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa
Ghana
Pavement technology with soil hardening water agent ‘STEIN’(SPEC COMPANY LIMITED)
Background
In Ghana, roads account for 95% of logistics, however even on major roads, the pavement rate is below 50%. In rural areas, the lack of road maintenance can cause shipment delays and disruptions, resulting in losses for farmers. Additionally, transporting goods on poorly maintained roads can damage crops due to shaking during transit, thus lowering their market value. Improving roads for shipments could effectively reduce food loss and increase local income. Despite the strong need for road maintenance, progress is slow primarily due to budget constraints. If there were lower-cost materials and methods than conventional asphalt paving, infrastructure, development could proceed more quickly. One solution to this is the use of soil stabilizers. Soil hardeners eliminate the need for soil removal and disposal, potentially reducing construction time.
Project Overview
Spec Co. Ltd. in partnership with UNIDO is leading this project seeking to improve rural infrastructure in Ghana by the use of environmentally friendly soil hardening agents to construct durable all-weather roads and irrigation systems. These enhancements will help prevent disasters, increase agricultural productivity, and enable farmers to transport their crops to markets and ports without reducing their value. Addressing inadequate road infrastructure will also benefit other sectors like mining.
The project will focus on transferring soil hardening technology through a comprehensive training program. Local engineers, workers from the construction and agriculture sector, and job seekers, with an emphasis on women, will receive hands-on training in using the soil hardening agent. The training will begin with a two-week course in Japan for trainers from local partners, who will then conduct local vocational training sessions in Ghana. The training will equip participants with the skills needed to implement this cost-effective technology, empowering them to undertake future infrastructure projects and supporting sustainable development in their communities.
